Lewis Cools Off Cougars 76-70

           ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- Lewis cooled off Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's hot-shooting in the second half Thursday and defeated the Cougars 76-70.
           The Cougars held an 11-point lead at halftime after shooting 55.2 percent from the field and 61 percent (8 of 13) in the first 20 minutes of the game.
           Lewis, now 15-5 overall and 8-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, fell as far back as 15 points in the first half. The Flyers countered with a strong second half, shooting 56 percent from the field. Dennis Thomas Jr. and Jason Genova each hit key free throws in the final 15 seconds of the game to help the Flyers capture the victory.
           T.J. Gray became SIUE's all-time leader in three-pointers made on his first trey of the night. He broke the record set by Ron Jones during the 2002-03 season. Gray, who now has a GLVC-leading 80 three-pointers this season, finished with six for the game and was SIUE's leading scorer with 18 points.
           The Cougars' Anthony Jones provided 14 points off the bench. J.B. Jones added 11 points of 5-of-9 shooting.
           SIUE, which had a three-game winning streak heading into the game, led 44-33 at halftime and had its lead erased and eclipsed on a pair of free throws by Brandon Dagans with 14:59 to play in the game. Dagans finished with 16 points before fouling out of the game. Keelan Donald added 16 for Lewis.
           The Cougars cooled off from the field in the second half, hitting 37.5 percent of its shots and only 1 of 12 from beyond the three-point arc.
           Genova was the leading scorer for Lewis with 21 points, including five three-pointers.
           SIUE, 11-9 overall and 4-8 in the GLVC, next meets UW-Parkside in a 3 p.m. contest Saturday in Kenosha, Wis.
