SIUE Gains Berth in GLVC Tournament

           EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Coach Wendy Hedberg's final women's basketball game at the Vadalabene Center was a great one with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville dominating Rockhurst 81-60.
           With the win, SIUE picked up the last spot in the eight-team Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The Cougars will travel to Highland Heights, Ky., to face off against Northern Kentucky, which earned the top seed in the GLVC East Division. Game time is 4:30 p.m. central time.
           The Cougars, 17-10 overall and 10-9 in the GLVC, forced 26 Rockhurst turnovers in the final home game of the season as seven SIUE players considered it their farewell at the Vadalabene Center.
           Amber Shelton, a senior from Edwardsville, scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and recorded six steals. Seniors Laura Witherspoon and Whitney Sykes each finished with 16 points. Elyse Morris, another senior added 11 while junior Jessie Stapleton scored 11 off the bench. It was a career-high for Witherspoon.
           SIUE rolled to a 39-23 lead at halftime, forcing 16 Rockhurst turnovers. Rockhurst never threatened the Cougars in the second half. Chelsea Barnett was the lone player in double figures for Rockhurst with 15 points.
           On Tuesday, SIUE meets Northern Kentucky, 20-7 overall. Northern Kentucky defeated the Cougars 75-67 on Dec. 1 at the Vadalabene Center. Below is the women's GLVC Tournament bracket.
