SJC Edges Cougars 73-71

           EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville nearly avenged its biggest defeat of the season Tuesday but fell 73-71 to Saint Joseph's in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Basketball Championships at the Vadalabene Center.
           SIUE finished the season 17-11 while Saint Joseph's advances to play Lewis in the semifinals of the league tournament. SIUE had previously lost to Saint Joseph's by 22 points back in January.
           The Cougars shot 59 percent in the first half behind six dunks from senior Doug Taylor, who also broke the school record for blocks in a game with eight. SIUE led 40-35 by halftime despite hitting just one three-pointer by halftime.
           Ronald Coleman gave the Pumas the lead with 11:24 to play in the game and held it until the end. SIUE was down two points with eight seconds remaining in regulation but a T.J. Gray three-pointer was short at the buzzer.
           SIUE recorded a season-low four three-pointers against SJC, which improved to 18-10. The Cougars shot just 1 of 10 from three-point range in the first half and 3 of 10 in the second half.
           Saint Joseph's hit eight three-pointers in the game with three each from Will Jones and Austin Peebles.
           Devin Thomas powered the Puma offense with 19 points while Coleman provided a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
           SIUE's J.B. Jones ended his four-year career as the all-time leader in assists and steals. In his final game, he led the Cougars in scoring with 19 points. Taylor added 18 points, hitting all eight of his shots from the field.
