DES MOINES, Iowa - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville forward Bob Ridder got his senior season off to a good start Saturday with a game-winning goal for the Cougar men's soccer team.
SIUE defeated Missouri State 1-0 in the opening game of the Drake Tournament.
"Overall, we were much improved from last week to this week. As a coaching staff, our goal was to play a better 90 minutes than we did last week against Bradley," said SIUE Coach Kevin Kalish.
Myles Hensler served up Ridder for the eventual game winner at 59:16. Ridder's drive was a shot down low which passed Missouri State goalkeeper Alex Riggs.
"Bob one-timed it. He just has a knack of scoring goals," said Kalish.
Both teams battled to a 0-0 deadlock at halftime. SIUE led the shot totals 4-3 after 45 minutes but took control of the game in the second half, outshooting the Bears 9-2. Freshman Brian Groark led all players with three shots.
"We came out and played a great second half," noted Kalish.
Nick Frasca recorded the 18th shutout of his collegiate career. He grabbed one save, a key one in the second half.
"Frasca did a fantastic job of organizing his four defensive backs," said Kalish.
SIUE next faces Drake in a 7:30 p.m. game Sunday.
