CHICAGO, Ill. -- Loyola literally waited until the last minute to defeat the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer team Sunday.
Keum Sung Kim scored with 43 seconds left in regulation as Loyola downed the Cougars 1-0. Kim's shot came on a cross from Will Martin.
SIUE coach Kevin Kalish said his team's defense played a good game.
"It's a gut-wrenching way to give up a goal that late in the game," he said.
Kim had been a thorn in SIUE's side all game, taking seven shots. Loyola, now 4-1-1 overall, threatened SIUE's defense 14 times for corner kicks.
SIUE had its chances as well with 11 shots overall. The shots were even 7-7 in the second half after Loyola held a clear 10-4 shot lead after 45 minutes of play.
"I'm proud of this team," said Kalish. "They deserved a more positive result."
SIUE's Nick Frasca grabbed four saves in goal. Loyola goalkeeper Brian Byrne collected five saves and the shutout.
SIUE, 3-4, next travels to Dayton to face the Flyers Friday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
