DAYTON, Ohio -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer nearly erased a three-goal deficit Friday, falling to the Dayton Flyers Friday night 3-2.
Jack Twellman and Mike Jones both scored their first goals of the season. Both came in the final seven minutes of play for the 3-5 Cougars.
"We got some opportunistic goals on some set pieces," said SIUE Coach Kevin Kalish. "Obviously it gives you some life when you score."
Dayton improved to 6-2-1 in what turned out to be a tale of two different halves. SIUE and Dayton were tied 0-0 at halftime with the Flyers holding a slight 7-5 edge on shots.
Kalish said Dayton came at the Cougars hard in the first 20 minutes and then had to defend when the Cougars built some momentum over the final 25 minutes of the half.
"I thought the first half was pretty even," said Kalish.
Both SIUE goalkeeper Nick Frasca and Dayton goalie Tyler Picard were found themselves in the middle of an offensive push in the second half. Both goalkeepers finished with three saves for the game.
Dayton struck first when Josh Albers scored just 47 seconds into the second half when he converted Isaac Kissi's pass from the touch line. After Jack Pearson scored off a header at 59:10, Albers struck a second time for the eventual game winner at 68:10 when he took another pass from Kissi and punched it in.
Kalish said the Cougars didn't respond well to Dayton's first goal, but obviously did not give up.
Twellman scored his first collegiate goal off a header from Nash Maduekwe at 83:47. Jones narrowed the scored to 3-2 at 86:29 when he scored from inside the box off a pass from Kyle O'Brien.
SIUE's last-ditch effort fell short when a corner kick with 27 seconds turned into a missed shot by O'Brien with 19 seconds left in the game.
The Cougars are now idle until Oct. 10 when they return to Korte Stadium for a home contest against McKendree. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
