NIU Nips Cougars in Double OT

         DeKALB, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Northern Illinois renewed its men's soccer rivalry Friday night, so much so that the two teams played overtime.
         Northern Illinois' Danny Lopez scored with 1:39 left in the second overtime period as the Huskies edged the Cougars 3-2.
         SIUE, 1-2, held a two-goal lead in the first half when Ryan Wilhelm scored on a bullet from 35 yards out at 17:09. Senior Nick Bigogno followed up at 24:32 from inside the box past Joe Zimka, who hadn't allowed a goal in his first two games of the season.
         SIUE Coach Kevin Kalish said Wilhelm's shot was struck well and into the upper corner, and Bigogno's goal was a score off pure individual effort by beating a couple of Huskie defenders.
         "We played the best soccer of the season in the first 45 minutes," said SIUE coach Kevin Kalish.
         The Cougars took just three shots in the first half and seven total. Northern Illinois, now 3-0, dominated the shot total with 25 overall, including a 13-1 advantage in the second half
         With a 2-0 halftime deficit, Northern Illinois cut the lead in half when Tim King scored inside the box past SIUE goalkeeper Nick Frasca. It would be Frasca who would have to face a penalty kick due to SIUE foul in the box less than two minutes later as Brad Horton evened the score.
         The two teams were deadlocked the rest of the half and into overtime until Lopez got the game-winner. Drew Jeskey and Engebreth Faerden were credited with assists on the play.
         "We're a young team, and we have to learn how to close out these games in the future," said Kalish.
         SIUE is now idle until next Friday when it travels to Wright State for a 7 p.m. contest in Dayton, Ohio.
