MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Milwaukee used its sizable rebounding advantage to collect a 70-59 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in men's college basketball action at U.S. Cellular Arena.
Milwaukee grabbed a 57-40 edge in rebounding, including 21 offensive boards. The Panthers, now 10-6, outscored SIUE 22-6 in second-chance points.
The Cougars, 5-13, picked up a career-high 20 points from senior guard John Edmison.
Milwaukee countered with a career night from 6-7 center James Eayrs, who scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Both were career highs.
SIUE Coach Lennox Forrester said the Cougars came out with a good level of enthusiasm.
"We made some big shots and then they made some big shots," said Forrester. "I thought our guys played hard and with some good intensity. It was something we had talked about after the last game."
Milwaukee held a slim four-point lead at halftime after leading by as much as 10. After being down 18-8, SIUE went on a 15-5 run to pull even at 23-23 with 5:37 to play off a three-pointer from Edmison.
It was Edmison who ignited the Cougars offensively with 15 points in the first half, including three three-pointers. SIUE freshman Terrance Williams further frustrated Milwaukee not necessarily with his offense, which included a monster dunk off a missed shot, but his three blocks.
Forrester said Edmison was a key to SIUE's first-half comeback.
"He came out aggressively and played like a senior," said Forrester.
In the second half, Milwaukee, which shot just 34.3 percent against SIUE's swarming defense, grabbed 31 rebounds and slowly pulled away from the Cougars. Tone Boyle was the only Panther starter scoring in double figures. He unloaded for 15 points, including four timely three-pointers.
Barry Wellington was SIUE's only other player to score double figures, finishing with 11 points. SIUE shot 31.6 percent from the field and hit 6 of 24 from three-point range.
