EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Bowling Green opened with a 26-2 lead in the first 12 minutes of the game Friday and defeated Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball 74-58 at the Vadalabene Center.
SIUE fell to 1-15 on the season while Bowling Green improved their record to 11-2.
"We came out tentative in the first half," Coach Amanda Levens said.
In the last seconds of the first half, Ashley Bey put in a lay up to cut the Bowling Green lead to 16 headed into halftime.
"Once we settled down we were able to have better control of the game. Unfortunately, we had allowed Bowling Green to have a big lead," said Levens.
SIUE would recover in the second half, outscoring the Falcons 39-35.
"We did not get any easy looks in the paint," Levens said. "Bowling Green's aggressive defense closed the gaps in the paint."
Senior center Jenny Wuest led the Cougars with 15 points and six rebounds. Ashley Bey added 13 points, and Brittany Imig put in 12 point in the loss. Jessie Stapleton led the Cougars in rebounds with eight.
Niki McCoy led all scorers with 16 points for the Falcons while Tracy Pontius added 14 points. Tara Breske led both sides with nine rebounds on the night.
The Cougars next travel to Toledo, Ohio, Sunday to take on the Toledo Rockets. Game time is 1 p.m. central time.
