EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Scott Meyer earned his fifth shutout and Kevin Bielicki scored his second goal of the season as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville blanked Centenary College 1-0.
The Cougars improved to 5-6-1 and will try to get to .500 on Saturday when they play host to IPFW at Korte Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
SIUE had multiple offensive opportunities against the visiting Gents, of the Summit League. SIUE's 11-8 edge in shots didn't tell much of the story as the Cougars put together a number of fast-break opportunities against Centenary, now 2-8-1.
SIUE Coach Kevin Kalish said he would have liked to have seen his team connect on more passes and be a little more assertive but was pleased the Cougars picked up the victory.
"The guys fought hard and found a way to win," said Kalish.
Cougar freshman Jared Tejada fed a pass to Bielicki, who drove the ball down the left side of the field, entered the box and then pushed it past Centenary's starting goalkeeper Rennie Walker.
Meyer finished the night with four saves, three of which came in the second half. SIUE has now won three of its last four games, all by a 1-0 score.
"Our defense is obviously strong at the moment. We've had a good number of shutouts. I think our goalkeeper has been fantastic all year," Kalish said.
With the shutout, Meyer's goals against average dropped to 0.98.
