KENNESAW, Ga. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville use the long ball as a weapon Friday in extending its softball winning streak to six games with victories over Tennessee Tech and Kennesaw State.
SIUE defeated Tennessee Tech 3-0 and Kennesaw State 9-3.
The Cougars improved to 6-1 and have two more games at the two-day Phyllis Rafter/Kennesaw State tournament. SIUE faces Wright State at 9:30 a.m. CT Saturday and then will play one more game against a team to be determined after round robin play has completed.
SIUE designated player Amanda Pucel blasted a two-run home run to left-center field in the second inning in the win over Tennessee Tech, which has a first-place vote in the Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll and was picked to finish second overall in OVC play. The Golden Eagles, 3-4, had their three-game winning streak broken earlier in the day with a 5-3 loss to Wright State.
Playing its first action against a future OVC opponent, the Cougars wanted to be ready.
"We asked them to be aggressive (at the plate)," said SIUE Coach Sandy Montgomery. SIUE finished with five hits and drew four walks off TTU starter Holly Thomas.
The Cougars cruised against the Golden Eagles with a four-hit shutout from Kaitlin Colosimo. The senior left-hander struck out five and didn't allow a walk. Colosimo wasn't hit until the fourth when the Golden Eagles collected two hits in both the fourth and fifth innings.
It was the third shutout of the season in SIUE's first six games.
First baseman Christina Signore rapped a pair of hits against the Golden Eagles, including an RBI single in the sixth as the Cougars added an insurance run when Lauren Zembruski scored.
"I was very pleased with our performance in that game," Montgomery said.
It was Zembruski who highlighted play in the win over Kennesaw State. The senior third baseman blasted a grand slam in the six-run fifth inning.
Nicole Beecher provided more excitement by hitting her first home run of the season, a back-to-back blast from the heart of the Cougar lineup.
Courtney Mall and Chaleen Rumpf each collected three hits for the Cougars, which finished with 12 for the game against three Kennesaw State pitchers.
SIUE hurler Erika Taylor improved to 4-0 with the win. She fanned 13 and scattered eight hits.
The Cougar pitching staff had another good day.
"They've got the job done in crucial situations," said Montgomery.
