Stapleton's Career Best Not Enough For Cougars

Box Score

VERMILLION, S.D. - Despite a career night from Jessie Stapleton, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville fell to South Dakota 94-61 at the DakotaDome.

Stapleton tossed in a career-high 22 points as the only Cougar scoring in double figures. The senior from Chillicothe, who grabbed 10 rebounds, posted the 11th career double-double.

As a team, however, everything wasn't as rosy. Five players finished in double figures for South Dakota. The Coyotes, now 16-8, scored a season-high 94 points, which also was the most allowed by the Cougars this season.

"They got a lot of open looks," said SIUE Coach Amanda Levens

Bridget Yoerger led the Coyotes with 20 points and nine rebounds. She finished 10 of 14 from the free throw line.

South Dakota excelled from beyond the arc, hitting 12 of 24 three-pointers. Ashley Wiemann collected five while Maggie Youngberg and Annie Roche added three apiece.

SIUE's bright spot was Stapleton's game, She shot 7 of 11 from the field, hitting a pair of three-pointers, and finished 6 of 8 from the free throw line. Levens said Stapleton played a complete game.

"She was fantastic on both sides of the floor. Hopefully, she can build on this performance," said Levens.

SIUE, 5-21, next travels to Houston Baptist for a 7:05 p.m. game Friday.
