EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - After shooting better than 72 percent in the first half, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball cruised to an 88-58 victory over Robert Morris, of Springfield.
SIUE improved to 8-15 after a lopsided first half. The Cougars posted 60 points in the first half and grabbed its best halftime lead of the season, a 37-point spread.
SIUE Coach Lennox Forrester said the Cougars needed to keep focused in the second half.
"We did a good job of getting to the basket," the second-year head coach said. "We played a good first half."
The Cougars made 24 of 33 from the field over the first 20 minutes, making Robert Morris scramble for any points they could manage against an overpowering offense.
Six players ended up scoring double figures for the Cougars. Brandon Dunson, the lone non-starter to score double figures, tied for the team lead with 13 points. Mark Yelovich and Barry Wellington also tied for the team lead in scoring.
Nikola Bundalo was a perfect 6 of 6 from the field and finished with 12 points. Aaron Garriott tossed in 11 points and added seven assists. Aamir McCleary pumped in 10 points with a team-best eight assists.
Robert Morris, now 5-14 overall, was led by 12 points from Terry Gilbert.
SIUE will now get ready for South Dakota, which invades the Vadalabene Center Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. contest. South Dakota enters the matchup with a 15-game winning streak.
SIUE Director of Athletics Dr. Brad Hewitt announced that Saturday will be a re-dedication day for the Vadalabene Center. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for pre-game festivities.
"We hope to build on this win going into the weekend," Forrester said.
