SHREVEPORT, La. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball scored a pair of extra-inning wins Saturday, improving its season record to 3-1.
The Cougars delivered a 1-0 win over Nicholls State, of the Southland Conference, and a 3-2 come-from-behind triumph over Boston College, of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
SIUE has one more game at the Centenary Tournament. The Cougars face off against Missouri State in an 11:30 a.m. contest Sunday.
SIUE Coach Sandy Montgomery said she was pleased with how well the team has adjusted to the pitching at the Division I level.
"They've made some good strides," Montgomery said.
Timely hitting, good defense and strong pitching lifted SIUE Saturday.
The Cougars picked up game-winning hits from Chaleen Rumpf in the Nicholls State game and Christina Signore in the Boston College contest. Freshman Megan Murphy, who pinch-ran in the eighth inning of both games, scored the game winner in both games.
In the Nicholls State game, SIUE's Kaitlin Colosimo and Nicholls State's Audra Wood fired up a pitcher's duel. Colosimo struck out six and allowed six hits. Wood fanned eight and gave up five hits.
Rumpf provided the game winner with a single to left field. It was one of four hits on the day for Rumpf. She now leads the starters in batting with a .462 average.
In the Boston College game, SIUE collected eight hits overall, including two each from Rumpf, Lauren Zembruski and Lindsay Longfellow.
Erika Taylor tossed a one-hitter against the Eagles. The only hit for Boston College was a fourth-inning bunt single by Rene Delagrammaticas.
"I was pleased with our pitching all day," said Montgomery.
SIUE gave up a pair of runs in the fourth and then had to play catch-up. The Cougars cut the lead to one in the sixth on an RBI single by Longfellow.
SIUE tied it up in the seventh as Zembruski doubled home Courtney Mall.
Signore provided the game winner with a hard liner down the right field line in the eighth, scoring Murphy.
