CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball defeated its second nationally-ranked team this week with a 4-1 victory over No. 18 Southern Illinois University Carbondale at Charlotte West Stadium.
SIUE shortstop Kasey Schlafke delivered the winning blow to the Salukis with a three-run home run in the fifth inning. The win gave SIUE a 13-4 record and a three-game win streak. SIUE previously defeated No. 12 Missouri this week. Both wins against the ranked teams have come on the road.
SIUE Coach Sandy Montgomery said the Cougars are just trying to win games in its first season with a Division I schedule and show they are an up-and-coming program.
"We certainly are making people notice who we are," said Montgomery.
The Salukis dropped to 13-3 with their second straight loss.
SIUE hurler Erika Taylor turned in another strong performance with her eighth win of the season. The sophomore right-hander allowed just two hits and struck out seven without giving up a walk.
"I though she threw better today than she did against Missouri," said Montgomery.
Courtney Mall put SIUE in charge early with a leadoff home run off SIUC's Nikki Waters, who suffered her first loss in seven decisions. Mall sent a 2-1 pitch over the left-field fence, giving the Cougars the early momentum.
The Salukis tied it up in the top of the fifth. Playing as the visitor in the Coach B Classic. the Salukis got on the scoreboard with a home run from left fielder Katie Schmidt.
The Cougars came back in the bottom half of the fifth as Chaleen Rumpf drew a one-out walk. Mall followed with a single to right field. Schlafke then turned a 1-1 pitch and sent it over the fence in left field.
"She came up with a big three-run homer," noted Montgomery.
Earlier in the day, SIUE took advantage of two Western Illinois errors in the eighth inning and went on for a 5-3 victory.
After being tied 2-2 through seven innings, the international tiebreaker rule was used. SIUE's Courtney Mall was placed on second. Just putting the bat on the ball made things happen for the Cougars. Kasey Schlafke and Lauren Zembruski each reached base on WIU infield errors. Mall scored on Schlafke's play. Schlafke scored on a sacrifice fly by Lindsay Longfellow. Zembruski stepped on home plate on a single to right field by Whitney Davis.
Montgomery said that while the Cougars were able to use Western Illinois miscues, the win was more about minimizing SIUE's mistakes.
Christina Signore led SIUE with two hits and an RBI single in the fourth inning. Zembruksi's opened SIUE's scoring in the fourth with a solo home run, her third blast of the season.
Western Illinois scored two runs in the fourth off SIUE winner Kaitlin Colosimo. WIU scored on an RBI triple by Julie DePolo and an infield out by Michelle Neubauer.
Colosimo gave up 10 hits and struck out six. Western Illinois left eight runners on base in the first six innings.
Lori Pankratz took the loss for Western Illinois, which stands at 4-8 overall. SIUE and Western Illinois play again Sunday at 2 p.m.
