Cougars Gain Split at UT Martin

         MARTIN, Tenn. -- Kaitlin Colosimo tossed her eighth shutout of the season Saturday in Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's 3-0 victory over UT Martin in college softball action.
         SIUE, 34-9, gained a split after dropping the first game of the doubleheader 5-2 to the Skyhawks, which now stand at 26-19.
         Colosimo was sharp in her outing, giving up just three hits. She retired the first 16 batters she faced and didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning. Colosimo needed just 81 pitches to defeat the Skyhawks. The senior left-hander struck out four and improved her season record to 15-4.
         Nicole Beecher provided the Cougar offense. She doubled home Lauren Zembruski in the fourth inning. Beecher later scored on a wild pitch after being sacrificed to third on a bunt by Lindsay Longfellow.
         Beecher collected her second RBI in the sixth, driving home Zembruski a second time with a double.
         Paij Lintz took the loss for UT Martin and now stands at 8-6.
         In game one, UT Martin launched three home runs beginning with a first-inning blast by Megan Williams. UT Martin would lead 2-0 until the fourth when Laura Roberts and Greer Long hit back-to-back solo home runs and Megan VanArsdale added an RBI double.
         The Cougars would strand 11 runners in the game and didn't tally its first run until the sixth off starter Kara Harper.
         Amanda Pucel singled to right and advanced all the way to third on an error by right fielder Meg Latimer. Chaleen Rumpf singled Pucel home to break up the shutout.
         Harper would walk the first two runners in the seventh and give up an RBI single to Beecher. UT Martin went to the bullpen for Lintz, who would earn her second save of the season by stranding two runners.
         Erika Taylor went the distance for the Cougars and now stands at 15-5 for the season.
         SIUE's road schedule is now complete for the 2009 season. The Cougars were 11-5 away from Cougar Field and 18-2 in neutral site games.
         The Cougars complete their schedule with their final seven games at home beginning with a Tuesday doubleheader against Western Illinois. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
