CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball reached and passed the 30-win mark for the 14th consecutive season with a doubleheader sweep Wednesday over Southeast Missouri State University.
The Cougars, now 31-7 overall with votes in the Ultimate College Softball.com NCAA Division I national poll, defeated their future Ohio Valley Conference opponents 6-1 and 12-3 with the nightcap going five innings.
SIUE left-hander Kaitlin Colosimo improved her record to 14-3 in the opener. The Cougar senior, who is SIUE's all-time leader in wins and strikeouts, struck out nine and walk one. She allowed just four hits and not one until the fifth inning after she had retired the first 14 SEMO batters.
The Cougar offense rallied for three runs in the third inning, all scoring with two outs. Chaleen Rumpf drew a one-out walk. After a strikeout by SEMO starter-loser Giana Zimmerman, Rumpf stole second and then scored on a double by Kasey Schlafke. Lauren Zembruski followed with an RBI double to right-center field. Zembruski later stole third and scored on an RBI single by Lindsay Longfellow.
SIUE padded its lead with three more in the top of the seventh before the Redhawks broke up Colosimo's shutout bid. SEMO shortstop Nicole Trancoso doubled home catcher Alex Ramirez with two outs.
In game two, SIUE coach Sandy Montgomery handed the ball to right-hander Katie Watkinson for her second start of the season. She scattered eight hits in five innings to earn her third victory without a loss this season.
Watkinson got the offensive support she needed early.
Five runs crossed the plate in the first inning sparked by a pair of two-run doubles by Christina Signore and Lindsey Liermann. Signore and Liermann each would finish the game with three RBIs apiece.
SEMO hurler Whitney Dupuis dropped to 2-6 after giving up 10 runs on 11 hits in three innings of work.
SIUE outfielder Courtney Mall quietly broke a school record in game one. With her game-opening walk, she broke the school record with her 106th career walk.
The Cougars, who have an NCAA RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) of 45 nationally, now head to Clarksville, Tenn., to take on future OVC opponent Austin Peay. SIUE and the Governors face off for a 5 p.m. doubleheader Friday.
