LOUISVILLE, Ky. - No. 17-ranked Louisville opened its own tournament with a 2-0 victory Friday over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Louisville, which moved up eight spots in this week's NSCAA national poll, picked up its third win of the season. SIUE fell to 1-2.
The U of L Tournament continues Sunday when the Cougars take on the Kentucky Wildcats in a 2 p.m. ET matchup.
SIUE coach Kevin Kalish credited Louisville. "They do a good job of pressuring," he said.
Louisville scored seven minutes into the game on a restart. Colin Rolfe connected from 10 yards away off a free kick from Paolo Delpiccolo.
The Cougars would not take their first shot until 40:02 when Randy Roy would hit the ball high over Louisville goalkeeper Andre Boudreux, who would record his third straight shutout.
SIUE, which was outshot 7-2, kept the defense strong for most of the second half. Louisville scored at 88:26 when Mark Knight dribbled into the box and slipped the ball past SIUE goalkeeper Scott Meyer.
"We have to do a better job in the final third," Kalish said.
