SIUE Gains Scoreless Tie With Ohio State

Box Score

Sept. 20, 2009

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Scott Meyer grabbed 12 saves Sunday as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville posted a 0-0 tie at Ohio State in men's college soccer.

Meyer was flawless in goal for his second shutout of the season. He previously recorded a shutout against Evansville to open the season.

"I thought Scott Meyer was exceptional," said SIUE coach Kevin Kalish , whose team is now 2-3-1 this season.

Kalish said he didn't want to further single out any defenders, midfielders or forwards. "I thought the whole team fought for each other."

The Cougar defense stood up to Ohio State's 24 shots, including six from Andrew Magill and five from Konrad Warzycha. Ohio State, which is ranked No. 6 in the Great Lakes region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, watched its record move to 2-0-3. Ohio State also was picked No. 29 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com national preseason rankings.

SIUE had its first scoring opportunity 1:57 into the game as Randy Roy had his shot blocked by an Ohio State defender in the box. Meyer gained his first save of the game at Scott Hegngi took the Buckeyes' first shot of the game.

Ohio State goalkeeper Matt Lampson, who recorded four saves overall for the Buckeyes, received credit for his first save of the game at 5:39 when Kevin Bielicki made the first of his team-leading four shots for the game.

Kalish said his team played consistent for the full 110 minutes of Sunday's contest, something he's stressed from day one. "We're a young team, and we're making progress," he said.

The Ohio State game was the first of four straight road contests for the Cougars. SIUE faces Dayton this Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET followed by a 1 p.m. game at Northwestern next Sunday. The road trip ends Oct. 3 at IUPUI.
