BROOKINGS. S.D. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling picked up its first win of the season and nearly took a second victory Sunday.

The Cougars defeated South Dakota State 18-12 but were edged by Northern State 21-18.

SIUE Head Coach David Ray said the Cougars were caught in the Midwest snow storms and did not arrive in Brookings until about three hours before match time.

"We were just flat," he said.

SIUE, 1-4, held the lead against Northern State 18-15 when 184-pounder Jordon Bakley pinned Baker Haar in 40 seconds. Northern State would take the final two matches as Brent Foscheim defeated SIUE's Robert Cooney 8-4 and SIUE's David Devine dropped a 5-4 decision to Matt Meuleners.

"Things just weren't going in the direction I thought it should," said Ray.

The Cougars performed better in the South Dakota State match. After a double forfeit at 125 pounds, SIUE won six out of the final nine matches. If not for an overtime match at 174 pounds, SIUE would have won the final six matches.

Steve Ross collected SIUE's biggest win at 157 pounds with a 10-3 decision over Andrew Youngblom. After an intermission, Gabe Hocum boosted SIUE with a 4-2 overtime victory over John Nething at 165 pounds.

Bakley, Cooney and Devine would close out the match with victories to give SIUE a six-point victory.

The Cougars now return home for their first home meet of the season. SIUE entertains Findlay and Northwestern next Sunday. The first match starts at noon at the SIUE Student Fitness Center.
