EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Three Southern Illinois University Edwardsville pins kept the match close Sunday, but Findlay held off the Cougars for a 26-18 wrestling victory at the Student Fitness Center.

SIUE also dropped a 51-0 decision to No. 9-ranked Northwestern.

Northwestern was the big winner of the day with a second dual-match victory over Northern Illinois, 38-0. Northern Illinois defeated Findlay in the final match of the day 25-6.

"A few of the guys wrestled real hard. It was an exciting dual just because we had a lot of pins," said SIUE Head Coach David Ray.

The Cougars picked up pins from John Petrov at 133 pounds, Derrick Pousson at 149 pounds and Jordon Bakley at 184 pounds.

"It's just tough when you are not wrestling with your starters. We have a few weight classes where guys are injured. We are even using our fourth guy in the lineup in some weight classes," added Ray.

The Cougars were outmatched by the nationally-ranked Wildcats, which did not lose any of its 20 matches Sunday.

"They're a solid team, and they proved it. They are as tough as any team we saw last year," Ray said.

SIUE is now idle until Jan. 7 when it travels to Iowa for a 7 p.m. dual match at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
