EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE found offense inside and out Saturday in an 82-55 triumph over Oakland City in women's college basketball.
Freshman center Raven Berry shot 12 of 18 from the field for 25 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Sophomore Melia Duncan scored 22 points and added four assists. Freshman guard Courtney Kenner came off the bench for 21 points on seven three-pointers. All three offensive performances were career highs in scoring.
Senior Ashley Bey provided the assists with a season-high 11. She also garnered five steals to become the seventh player in school history to record more than 200 career assists.
"I thought everybody on our team contributed, which is nice when you win that everybody feels they had a hand in it," said SIUE Coach Amanda Levens.
SIUE jumped out to a 19-point lead at halftime by pounding the offensive glass and forcing the turnover. SIUE grabbed 21 offensive boards in the first half and outrebounded the Mighty Oaks 55-22 for the game.
"We had more offensive rebounds than defensive rebounds. That's pretty rare I think," said Levens. SIUE, which finished with 30 offensive rebounds, scored 29 points off its second chances.
Oakland City also committed 18 of its 21 turnovers in the first half. SIUE scored 24 points off second-chance points for the game.
The Mighty Oaks finished with three players in double figures, led by 16 points from Kristi McVey. Oakland City also picked up 13 from Samantha Stahl and 10 from Sarah Roth.
The Cougars' lead was cut to as little as 12 in the second half, but SIUE's defensive pressure resulted in a pair of runs in the half that put the game to rest. Kenner started a 7-0 run with 10:11 to play. Berry opened up a 10-0 run with 2:49 to play with a basket. That final run included two three-pointers from Kenner.
"In the second half, I thought we did a good job of being patient and just taking what they gave us," said Levens.
The Cougars now have eight days before heading to Vermillion, S.D., to take on South Dakota in a rematch. SIUE defeated South Dakota 62-51 earlier this season.
