BELLEVILLE, Ill. - Western Illinois pulled out three of four three-set matches and defeated Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 4-3 in women's college tennis at Kingspoint.

SIUE, 1-7, appeared strong in doubles with a clean sweep of the Leathernecks. Carli Connors and Maggie Boeckman blanked WIU's Marcela Brandao and Yana Meinert 8-0. Ali Wulfers and Amanda Niebur downed Western Illinois' Stephanie Baumer and Claire Griffin 8-1. Laura Horning and Kelsey Laird edged WIU's Kate Kennedy and Amy Unzicker 8-6.

The Leathernecks, 1-6, battled through the singles despite losing the doubles point. WIU won three of four three-set matches during singles play. Baumer split the first two sets with Boeckman 6-4, 2-6 and then took the third set 6-3. Unzicker defeated Horning 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Kennedy topped Amanda Miller 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Laird picked up a three-set victory for the Cougars, winning 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Meinert.

Wulfers earned SIUE's only singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Griffin.
