HAMPTON, Va. - Five Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals of the winner's bracket after day one of three at the NCWA National Championships.
SIUE is in third place in the team race. The North Central Conference champions finished day one with 31.5 points after all eight of its wrestlers won its first match. David Devine, Eric Pretto, Brendan Murphy, Kyle Lowman, and Steve Ross won two matches each to advance to the quarterfinals.
Central Florida has the early lead in team standings with 36.5 points. UCF is followed by The Apprentice School with 33.5 and SIUE.
Devine, a heavyweight, advanced with pins over Albert Sykes, of Mercer, in 41 seconds and Alex Driggers, of Radford, in 2:05.
Pretto moved forward at 165 pounds with a 7-4 decision over Rhode Island's Ryan Tompkins and a 5:59 pin over Northampton's Ryan Cressman.
Murphy advanced at 133 pounds with a 37-second pin over Connecticut's Evan Nahins and a 13-0 rout over Benn Vang, of M.I.T.
Lowman defeated Wichita State's Andrew Rexroad 11-4 and then pinned Ricky Anderson, of the Apprentice School, in 5:23. Lowman competes at 149 pounds.
Ross won a pair of decisions at 157 pounds, defeating Oakland's Glen Evans 15-0 and Radford's Tyler Reedy 9-8.
SIUE also has 141-pounder Dillon Pousson, 197-pounder A.J. Smith, and 235-pounder Chase Grafton competing in the wrestlebacks as competition continues Friday.
