CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball completed the Coach B Classic with a 3-1 record Sunday after defeating Kansas 5-2 and dropping a 6-4 decision to Southern Illinois.
SIUE, 9-9, picked up another pitching victory for junior right-hander Erika Taylor, who improved to 8-6 overall. She struck out five and gave up five hits to the Jayhawks, 9-10.
"We hit the ball well this weekend," said SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery. "We've made a lot of strides over the past couple of weekends."
The Cougars took advantage of a throwing error for its first run against Kansas. Chaleen Rumpf drew a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey Barron. Lauren Zembruski then singled Rumpf over to third. When Zembruski stole second, an errant throw allowed Rumpf to score from third.
SIUE scored two more in second and the fifth. Four different players - Zembruski, Laurie Siebert, Samantha Stanicek and Megan Murphy - recorded RBIs for the Cougars.
In Sunday's nightcap, the Cougars and the Salukis battled all game. The Cougars struck first with an RBI double by Whitney Davis in the first inning. SIUC took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on RBIs by Alicia Garza and Katie Wilson.
SIUE tied it up almost immediately with a RBI single by Murphy in the second inning. SIUC regained the lead in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Courtney Kennedy.
The Cougars played catchup with a score in the fourth inning. Taylor Tooley reached on an error by SIUC starter Britney Lang, who would be relieved of her pitching duties just before Rumpf singled home Tooley.
SIUC broke the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run homer by Allie Hanson.
The Cougars made a final comeback in the seventh. After putting the first three runners on base, SIUE came away with one run on a single by Seibert before Danielle Glosson would earn the save in relief of Alex Peters, who collected her fifth win of the season.
Taylor took the loss, going six innings and striking out five batters.
