EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville had its home opener spoiled Friday night when Western Illinois scored a goal in the 85th minute for a 1-0 victory in men's college soccer action at Korte Stadium.
Alexis Dominguez scored at 84:25 on a header off a pass from Daniel Lewis. Dominguez sparked the Fighting Leathernecks with his shot from 10 yards out.
SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish said he thought his team could have played better in the offensive third.
Both teams were back and forth all game. After both recording six shots each in the first half, the Cougars grabbed the second-half edge in shots 8-4.
"We had too many missed opportunities, and they punished us on one late," said Kalish.
Matt Spiess looked to have a goal in the 80th minute of play for the Cougars but was called offsides as the ball hit the back of the net. SIUE's offense challenged WIU goalkeeper Andy Ryan for six saves with three coming in each half.
"I thought we responded a lot better in the second half after a flat first half. We played with a little more urgency and energy, and I felt like the game was swinging our way," Kalish said.
Four SIUE players finished with two shots each. They were Brian Groark, Kevin Bielicki, Jose Tamayo and Benny Jeffery. The Cougars dominated in one area - corner kicks. SIUE recorded eight while the Western Illinois offense was held without a corner kick.
Scott Meyer took the loss in goal. He recorded four saves for the game.
SIUE now looks to rebound Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest against visiting Belmont.
