Goal in 85th Minute Trips Up Cougars

Box Score

TULSA, Okla. - SMU scored in the 85th minute Friday to upend SIUE 1-0 in men's college soccer.

The Mustangs, ranked second in the Midwest Region in the NSCAA rankings, improved to 4-0 by edging the Cougars on a late goal by Juan Castillo at 84:08.

"We were in the game until the last minute. We just came up a little short," said SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish.

The Cougars must now rebound for a second game on this trip Sunday. No. 3-ranked Tulsa entertains SIUE for a 2:30 p.m. game. The Hurricanes also are ranked as the top team in the Midwest Region.

Kalish said his team just needs to continue to improve as it marches toward its first Missouri Valley Conference season. The Cougars are banking on playing a tough non-conference schedule in leading up to MVC play. For now, noted Kalish, the team will regroup and return to Hurricane Stadium just less than 48 hours.

"We're going to focus on recovering tonight and getting ready for Sunday," added Kalish.

SMU garnered 20 shots on offense in Friday's win. The Mustangs picked up seven shots from Castillo and four more from Arthur Ivo.

Senior Matt Spiess came off the bench to provide some spark. He recorded two shots as the Cougars combined for six overall.

SIUE goalkeeper Scott Meyer grabbed eight saves but wasn't able to stop SMU's late charge as Castillo scored from 10 yards out. He accepted the ball from SMU defender Leone Cruz and connected toward the right post.

Craig Hill was the winning goalkeeper for SMU. He recorded three saves.
