Cougars Fall to No. 2 Tulsa 1-0

Box Score

TULSA, Okla. - With a pair of stingy defenses playing well, No. 2-ranked Tulsa pulled out a 1-0 victory over SIUE in men's college soccer.

The Cougars fell to 1-3 for the season with the loss. All four of SIUE's games have been decided by a single goal.

Tulsa improved to 4-0 with what was easily its toughest game so far this season. The Hurricanes had outscored their first three opponents by an 11-1 mark.

SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish said the Cougars stood tall against the nationally-ranked Hurricanes. "I thought it was a good soccer game - very back and forth. We had a couple of chances to equalize," he said.

Tulsa's goal came on a restart at 14:05 of the first half. Ashley McInnes scored his third goal of the season off a free kick that deflected off SIUE's wall and into the goal.

SIUE's defense gave up just 12 shots to a team that had come into the contest averaging 23. McInnes and Austin Neal led the Hurricanes with three shots each.

"I give Tulsa a lot of credit. They are a good team. We had a lot of good players who stepped up today. I think we matched them for most of the day," Kalish said.

The Cougars managed six shots against Tulsa with two coming from senior midfielder Randy Roy.

Kalish said Ryan Wilhelm had a strong two-game set in Tulsa. "Ryan had a fantastic weekend. He made good decisions and was good at one-on-one defense," Kalish added.

Scott Meyer took the loss in goal for the Cougars. He collected five saves. Ray Clark earned a shutout for his fourth straight win while grabbing three saves.

"The whole team played well today. They showed they can play with one of the best teams in the country," said Kalish.

SIUE now returns home to Korte Stadium for the start of a four-game home stand. The home stand begins Friday against Cleveland State at 7 p.m.
