EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer picked up its first win of the season Saturday with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Belmont at Korte Stadium.

Senior Randy Roy picked up the game-winner at 56:34 when a slew of Cougars rushed the net. With multiple passes inside the 18-yard box, Roy tapped in the ball from three yards out on the right side past Belmont goalkeeper Juho Illi. Benny Jeffery and Kevin Bielicki were credited with assists on the play.

SIUE evened its record at 1-1 with the victory and now heads out for its first road contests of the season. The Cougars travel to Tulsa, Okla., for two games. SIUE faces SMU (Southern Methodist) Friday at 5 p.m. and host Tulsa next Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

"I think it's another step forward for us, and I'm glad to finally get that first win of the year," said SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish.

Belmont put SIUE in catch-up mode early in the game. After a Cougar foul from 35 yards out, Nico Olsak served the ball into the box to Dan Meacock, who headed the ball in. Belmont, 0-2, had scored its first goal of the season.

SIUE evened the score 1-1 at 26:53 when Benny Jeffery accepted a pass from Brian Groark seven yards outside the box and on the left side. With a quick left foot, Jeffery sent the ball blazing past Illi for the score.

"Randy is the heart and soul of this group, and Benny is a guy who can get points for us," Kalish said of tonight's goal scorers.

SIUE dominated the shot count 13-6 with three each from Roy and Jeffery. But it was SIUE's ability to come from behind that Kalish took notice.

"To know that you can come back from a one-goal deficit is important for the future," said Kalish.
