Creighton Edges Cougars 1-0

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Brent Kallman scored his first goal of the season Saturday as No. 6 Creighton defeated SIUE 1-0 in Missouri Valley Conference men's soccer action.

The game's only goal was scored at 35:36 off a corner kick. Bruno Castro tapped the ball a few inches to teammate Jose Ribas who would tap it back. Castro then fired a cross into the box to Kallman, who found the left side of the net with a header.

"Creighton is a quality team and quality program. Hats off to them for finishing their chance. I thought we had our moments as well. Nothing to hang our heads about. I thought we played a decent game and have something to build on," said SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish.

SIUE goalkeeper Scott Meyer played collected a season-high 10 saves. Several of his stops would have been insurance goals for the Bluejays, now 13-2 overall and 2-1 in the MVC.

"Scott had a good game tonight. He is a great shot stopper. I think he is one of the best in the country. He played a solid match," Kalish said.

The Cougars, 7-6-3 overall and 1-3-1 in the MVC, had their chances on offense with eight shots. None were perhaps better than a header by Jack Twellman with about two minutes to play in the game. The ball veered just left of the goal.

Patrick Clendenny was the lone Cougar with more than one shot. Derek Huffman and Aaron Lantz put their shots on goal for Creighton goalkeeper Brian Holt, who had two saves.

Creighton and SIUE sped up the pace and played high-pressure soccer the full 90 minutes. The Bluejays finished with 20 shots for the game, including four from Ethan Findlay and three each from Jose Gomez, Greg Jordan, Kris Clark, and Kallman.

"We did a pretty good job limiting their chances, especially in the first half," Kalish said. "I thought our back four were pretty good for most of the night.

"We both like to play attacking style of possession-oriented soccer. At the end of the day it comes down to finishing chances."

SIUE next has its home finale Tuesday when it plays host to Nebraska-Omaha in a 7 p.m. contest at Korte Stadium.
