Box Score NASSAU, Bahamas - Raven Berry recorded
her fourth double-double of the season Tuesday as SIUE downed
Georgia State 63-49 at the Bahamas Sunsplash Shootout.
Berry, who scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, was named
to the All-Tournament team. SIUE women's basketball improved to 6-5
and joins Eastern Illinois and UT Martin as the lone Ohio Valley
Conference teams with winning non-conference records as the league
season gets underway.
SIUE defeated Georgia State with a balanced offensive attack. Jazmin
Hill led SIUE in scoring with 12 points, all on three-pointers.
Katie
Hempen scored 10 for the Cougars. Melia
Duncan and Tierny
Austin added eight points each.
The Cougars' defense turned up the heat against the Panthers,
now 4-6. Georgia State committed 27 turnovers, and SIUE took
advantage of those miscues by turning them into 33 points on the
offensive end.
Georgia State held an early four-point lead on a three-pointer
by Kendra Long just more than five minutes into the game. It would
be the Panthers' biggest lead for the night as Austin would cut the
lead to one with 13:27 on a three-pointer.
The Cougars would take the lead for good a minute later when Kiara
Conner connected on a jumper inside the paint. SIUE pulled
ahead 14-13 with 12:24 to play in the first half on Conner's score.
SIUE maintained the lead and held a 31-25 advantage by
halftime.
SIUE Head Coach Amanda
Levens had her team playing efficient as the Cougars committed
just 13 turnovers and grabbed 10 steals. SIUE shot 45 percent from
beyond the arc and 41 percent overall.
"We played hard and disciplined on both ends of the floor. We
were very balanced and everyone contributed. It was a total team
win and a great response after a tough game the night before. Our
execution in such a short turn around between games was fantastic,"
said Levens.
Chan Harris was the lone player in double figures for Georgia
State with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
SIUE is now idle until OVC play begins with a Dec. 31 matinee at
the Vadalabene Center when the Cougars entertain Jacksonville
State.
