Box Score 2 EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Closing out its three-match home stand, the
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's tennis team
earned a weekend split falling to Saint Louis 6-1 Saturday before
taking down Bradley 4-3 Sunday.
Junior Maggie Boeckman
got the only victory for the Cougars against the Billikens in the
6-1 loss Saturday. Boeckman defeated Casey Miller 7-6 (6), 6-4 at
No. 2 singles.
Saint Louis remained undefeated at 4-0 with the win, and SIUE
Head Coach Jason
Coomer looks forward to continuing the cross-town rivalry with
the Billikens.
The Cougars evened their weekend record edging out Bradley 4-3
Sunday to move to 2-3 on the season.
"The team's ability to bounce back after a disappointing loss
less than 24 hours earlier was an encouraging sign and shows the
level of maturity that is growing with our program," said
Coomer.
Looking to set the tone early, SIUE swept through doubles action
to get the important first point. The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams
of Carli
Connors and Joanna Corkern and
Rachel Webb
and Boeckman, respectively, won by similar 8-6 scores.
Turning to singles action, the Cougars split the six matches to
triumph 4-3 over the Braves.
Boeckman picked up her third consecutive No. 2 singles win
coming from a set down to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 over Sarah
Rodefeld.
"Maggie was a bright spot as she grinded out a three-set win,"
added Coomer.
Sophomore Amanda Miller
earned her first singles win of the season blanking Brigitte Grad
6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 position.
With the match on the line, all eyes were on the No. 6 singles
match between SIUE's Joanna Corkern and
Bradley's Ashley Roth. Corkern came through for the Cougars with a
6-4, 6-3 victory.
"I was very happy to see the efforts of Amanda and Joanna as
they turned in two solid results to help us get the win," said
Coomer.
SIUE will have more than a week off before hitting the road for
a match at Austin Peay Feb. 19.
