Brackets After Round One

MACON, Ga. - Twelve of 14 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestlers won their first round match Thursday as the NCWA Championships began on the campus of Mercer University.

Michael Dace posted the fastest pin for the Cougars in the first round, dispatching 174-pounder Eric Parsons of Connecticut in 58 seconds.

Defending NCWA national champion David Devine began his title defense with a 1:03 pin over Albert Sykes of Mercer.

Gabe Hocum also recorded a pin for SIUE at 165 pounds., defeating Colorado State's Jeff Adams in 4 minutes, 23 seconds.

SIUE was in fourth after the first round with 19 points. The Cougars trailed only North Central Conference champion Grand Valley State (27), Cal-Baptist (22), and Mercer (19.5).

Other first round winners for the Cougars included Paul Myers, John Petrov, Lawrence Blackful, Derrick Pousson, Isaac Ervin, Steve Ross, Deshoun White, and Robert Cooney.

Kyle Lowman and Eric Biehl lost their first round matches and will next compete in the wrestlebacks. All SIUE wrestlers have at least one more match today.
