Box Score MACOMB, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
women's tennis team put together an impressive afternoon dominating
from start to finish in a 4-1 victory against Western Illinois
Sunday at the Lakeside Recreation Center.
The Cougars, now 4-6 overall, emphatically ended a five-match
road trip with their second win over an in-state opponent this
season.
SIUE earned the first point of the match by winning two of the
three doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, Rachel Webb and
Maggie Boeckman defeated Amy Unzicker and Claire Griffin of WIU
8-2.
Ali Wulfers and Laura Horning
followed suit at the No. 3 spot picking up an 8-3 win over the
Fighting Leathernecks' Melissa Kaufmann and Kara Chicoine.
"Our doubles came through for us again as we got off to a fast
start," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "This
set the tone for the rest of the match."
The Cougar momentum carried into singles as they won three of
the four finished positions to clinch the victory while holding a
lead in the remaining two matches still on court.
Playing alongside the doubles action, sophomore Amanda Miller
cruised to a win at No. 6 singles blanking Madison Zimmerman 6-0,
6-0.
"Amanda played aggressively and took advantage of short balls by
putting them away for winners," added Coomer.
Boeckman defeated Jill Furlong at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-4, and
Webb closed the match in favor of SIUE with a 6-3, 6-2 win over
Griffin at the No. 4 position.
"I was happy to see Rachel clinch the match," said Coomer. "That
shows the level of focus she has as a freshman."
After five consecutive road matches, SIUE returns home to face
Southern Illinois University Carbondale Saturday at 10 a.m. before
facing UMKC Sunday at 2 p.m.
