Cougars Drop Rescheduled Game to Salukis

Box Score

April 19, 2011

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois hit a pair of home runs Tuesday and defeated its sister school Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 10-1 in five innings in a makeup game at Charlotte West Field.

SIUE is now 22-22 after having its seven-game winning streak halted while the Salukis improved to 28-12. The Cougars next head to Nashville, Tenn., to end their eight-game road trip. SIUE plays a three-game series with Tennessee State beginning with a doubleheader Friday and a single game Saturday.

On Tuesday, SIUE took the lead early in the first inning as Lindsey Barron reached on an infield error. She moved to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a single by Kasey Schlafke.

Schlafke would be the lone Cougar to gain a hit. The senior third baseman had SIUE's two hits. She added a double in the fourth inning against SIU's winning pitcher Danielle Glosson.

After SIUE's run, the Salukis pressed ahead and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Cristina Trapani hit a two-run home to put the Salukis ahead for good.

"It just spiraled from there," said SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery. "We just couldn't get anything going today."

SIU added three runs in the third and five more in the fourth. Jayna Spivey highlighted the fourth with a grand slam.

Erika Taylor took the loss for the Cougars and is now 15-12. Glosson improved to 18-8.

"We need to get back to practice for the rest of the week and get ready for Tennessee State," said Montgomery.
