Box Score OMAHA, Neb. - The Missouri Valley Conference men's soccer season got off to a heartbreaking start for SIUE Saturday at Morrison Stadium.
"It was a typical conference game with both teams taking turns dictating play," said SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish.
Creighton would make the crucial play scoring in the 106th minute for a 1-0 double overtime victory over the Cougars. The Bluejays, ranked No. 19 in the College Soccer News national poll, took the Cougars, which entered the contest ranked No. 28 nationally in the same poll, to the brink before picking up its first MVC win of the season.
SIUE falls to 8-4 for the season. Creighton improved to 7-3-2 and a 1-0-1 in MVC play.
Andrew Ribeiro scored the winning goal at 105:53 on a header from 10 yards out on a service from Jose Ribes. His shot was in front of the goal and was netted toward the right post.
Both teams had multiple chances in regulation and in overtime. SIUE goalkeeper John Berner turned away six Creighton shots. Creighton goalkeeper Alex Bolowich saved five shots.
"Games are won and lost in the penalty box," Kalish said. "I felt like we had a lot of chances to win as did they."
SIUE's biggest opportunities came on corner kicks. The Cougars accumulated a season-high 12 corners against the Bluejays.
"We had a lot of moments where we were close or on the doorstep," said Kalish.
Brian Groark led SIUE's offense with four shots. Peter Kelly added three as the Cougars totaled 16 for the match. Creighton finished the game with 23 shots paced by Ribeiro's five.
