SIUE Edges SLU 2-1

Box Score

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Rebecca Gray tossed a three-hitter Wednesday as SIUE softball won its final non-conference road game of the regular season with a 2-1 win over Saint Louis.

Gray struck out six en route to her second win of the season. The win also marked a season sweep for the Cougars over the Billikens. SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery said Gray turned in a strong performance in the circle.

"Becca threw well today. She was getting ahead in the count and keeping the ball down in the strike zone. When you do those types of things, you'll be successful," Montgomery said.

The Cougars, 20-26, scored all of the offense they needed in the first inning. Brittany Toney and Rachel Coonrod hit back-to-back RBI singles to put SIUE up 2-0 early.

"We hit a lot of balls hard today. The wind was blowing in so it slowed down a few of them," said Montgomery.

SLU, 19-29, scored one unearned run in the third inning against Gray and had just one hit until the seventh inning. Gray retired nine straight batters at one point in the contest.

Gray outdueled SLU's Julia Austin who fell to 4-10 for the season.

SIUE's focus returns to the Ohio Valley Conference this weekend with three games against Eastern Kentucky at Cougar Field. Saturday's doubleheader action begins at 1 p.m. There will be a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.

"It's always good to come off a win when you're coming into an important weekend," said Montgomery.
