Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE women's tennis team finished the weekend 1-1 after losing a hard-fought match to Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State 5-2 Sunday at the Edwardsville YMCA.
"Today's match was a hard fought battle," Head Coach Jason Coomer said. "Give credit to Murray State; they played the big points well."
The Racers took the doubles point despite narrowly winning all three doubles matches by 9-8 scorelines.
"As a coach or as a player, I don't think I've ever been a part of a match where all three doubles matches ended 9-8," Coomer said. "All three matches could've gone either way; I was pleased with our overall effort in doubles."
In singles play, SIUE freshmen Monique Krutak and McKenzie Thomas each won their respective matches.
Krutak picked up her 12th singles victory of the season by downing MSU's Ashley Canty (6-2, 7-6), while Thomas won her eighth with an 8-4 decision over Suzaan Stoltz.
"Monique played very well for us today," Coomer added. "Her ability to maintain her composure was very positive and shows a step in how she's growing as a player at the college level."
The loss snaps a two-match winning streak for the Cougars, who are now 6-9 overall and 2-2 in the OVC.
Next up for SIUE is a home match against SIU Carbondale Wednesday at 2 p.m.
