Cougars' Win Streak Snapped at Northern Illinois

Box Score

DEKALB, Ill. – Four unanswered goals by Northern Illinois lifted the Huskies to a 4-1 win over SIUE in nonconference men's soccer Wednesday night at the NIU Soccer and Track and Field Complex.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Cougars, who dropped to 4-7-2 overall. Northern Illinois improved to 3-6-2 with the victory.

Jabari Danzy opened the scoring with his third goal of the year coming in the 27th minute. Austin Ledbetter split a pair of defenders with a through ball, allowing Danzy to get behind the defense before depositing the ball into the back of the net to put the Cougars up 1-0.

Richard Hall equalized for the Huskies just 86 seconds later. Hall pulled off the "olimpico" goal, scoring directly from a corner kick. Hall's kick sailed high towards the goal where SIUE goalkeeper Kent Kobernus managed to get a hand on it. Kobernus couldn't keep the ball from falling in at the back post to make it 1-1. It stayed that way through halftime.

In the second half, Northern Illinois scored three goals in less than 20 minutes for the final margin. Len Heinson scored a pair of goals in the 51st and 61st minutes. Cody Witkowski capped the scoring with his first goal of the year in the 70th minute.

For the game, SIUE outshot NIU 12-8, but Huskie goalkeeper Drew Donnally made three saves to preserve the win. Kobernus made two saves in the losing effort.

SIUE continues play outside of the Missouri Valley with a 6:30 (CT) game Tuesday at Louisville.
