Cougars Fall in Finale, Prepare for Tournament

CHICAGO – SIUE men's soccer dropped its regular season finale Saturday, falling in a defensive battle 1-0 at Loyola. The Cougars will be the No. 2 seed for next week's Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

SIUE finished the MVC season with a 4-1-1 record (13 points). Missouri State, which defeated Evansville Saturday night 1-0 in overtime, finished 4-0-2 (14 points) to claim its sixth regular season title.

The Cougars (5-8-4 overall) will play in the second semifinal of the tournament Friday at 6 p.m. SIUE will face the winner of the Evansville/Bradley quarterfinal game.

Loyola's Brian Bement netted the only goal of the game in the 33rd minute of play. Brody Kraussel assisted on the game-winner.

The two teams combined for just nine shots. Christian Volesky and Travis Hoguet each had two shots for the Cougars. Both of Hoguet's shots were on target, while Volesky also had a shot on goal. Jabari Danzy added a shot on goal as well. The Ramblers were limited to just two shots, both of which came from Bement.

Loyola goalkeeper Tim Dobrowolski made four saves to earn the shutout. SIUE goalkeeper Kent Kobernus made a single save in the loss.
