Bloomington, Ind. – SIUE wrestling earned a split in its two matches Saturday at Indiana.

The Cougars dropped a 28-12 decision to host Indiana and routed Manchester 48-3.

"If we had wrestled with the same intensity as we did against Manchester, we would have defeated Indiana," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "Until we figure out how to wrestle our best match every time out, we're going to continue to lose against those teams."

SIUE's Chris Johnson and Angelo Silvestro were the lone wrestlers to win twice.

"They are both getting better each match," said Spates.

Johnson bested Indiana's Garrett Goldman 3-1 in a sudden victory match. The Cougar heavyweight then defeated Manchester Dustin Kult 7-2.

Silvestro blanked Indiana's Sean Brown 4-0 and won by technical fall over Manchester's Eric Dan 16-1.

The Indiana match was much closer than the final score indicated. SIUE dropped three matches by two points or less.

SIUE matchup with Manchester was much more decisive. The Cougars collected pins by Karsten Van Velsor, Erik Travers, Jake Residori, Derek Nagel, and Matthew McCliments. Travers claimed the fastest pin of the day with a 1:05 win over Manchester's Bryce Roberts.

"The guys wrestled well against Manchester. They attacked quickly at the beginning," said Spates.

The Cougars have their final dual matches of 2014 next Friday at Missouri. SIUE takes on Kent State, host Missouri, and South Dakota State in Columbia, Missouri.
