EVANSTON, Ill. – SIUE wrestlers scored seven points Monday at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Cougars won six matches on day one of the two-day tournament. All of SIUE's wrestlers were eliminated.
"We're definitely seeing some good things," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "It's frustrating to see some of the ways we are losing matches. In winnable matches we have to find ways to win them."
Jake Residori advanced two rounds in the 174-pound championship bracket and was later eliminated in overtime by South Dakota State's David Kocer.
Connor McMahon and Jake Tindle also advanced to the consolation fourth round but were edged in their final match. McMahon lost to Minnesota's Pat Smith (unattached) 8-5. Tindle was defeated 4-1 by Maryland's Rob Fitzgerald.
"Overall it's good for our guys to come to this tournament and get out into this environment," said Spates. "They get a look to see what the best wrestlers in the country are doing."
SIUE begins the Southern Conference regular season at home against Appalachian State Jan. 7 at the Vadalabene Center. The first whistle is set for 7 p.m.
