BOONE, N.C. – SIUE wrestling's six-match North Carolina road trip came to an end Sunday as the Cougars completed their 2013-14 Southern Conference schedule.
The Cougars finished the regular season with a 5-19 record overall and a 2-5 record in SoCon action after a 26-21 loss to Davidson and a 27-12 loss to Appalachian State.
SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates said the six matches in five days appeared to have affected the Cougars.
"Our guys were wrestling hard, but we were wearing down at the end of matches. The trip wore them down a bit," said Spates.
SIUE's Matt Lester and Jake Residori were double winners Sunday.
Lester scored a technical fall over Davidson's Patrick Devlin 16-0 in 3 minutes, 4 seconds. Lester also edged Appalachian State's Zack Strickland 8-7 at 165 pounds.
Residori earned a bonus team point for the Cougars at 174 pounds with his major decision over Davidson's Nathaniel Powers 12-4. Residori also bested Appalachian State's Colin Hedash 5-4.
"They both wrestled hard and smart," said Spates. "It was nice to get two wins out of them."
With the regular season now complete, the Cougars now look to SoCon Tournament Mar. 8th in Buies Creek, N.C.
Spates said he expects the coaches to fight for their own wrestlers in the seeding process. "I think we'll be around the 3 to 5 seed for a lot of our guys," Spates added.
