Box Score 2 BATON ROUGE, La. – The SIUE softball team got its 2014 regular season underway Friday with a pair of games at the LSU Tiger Classic.
In SIUE's first game of the day, the Cougars suffered a 2-1 defeat in eight innings against Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State.
SIUE held a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 7th inning, but the Cowboys' Danielle Riddle delivered a game-tying RBI single with two outs to send the teams to extra innings where OSU prevailed.
The Cougars had taken a late lead when freshman Allison Smiley delivered an RBI double in the 6th inning to plate Alex McDavid.
Sophomore pitcher Haley Chambers impressed in her first start of the season, surrendering just one earned run on five hits while logging four strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work.
Later, SIUE fell to No. 17 LSU by a 14-2 score. Originally scheduled for 7 p.m., the game didn't begin until after 10 p.m. CT. Brittany Toney and Amy Hunt recorded RBI's for the Cougars in the loss.
SIUE returns to action Saturday with two more games in Baton Rouge. The Cougars face Minnesota at 9 a.m. CT before taking on Central Arkansas at 1 p.m.
