Chambers' No-Hitter Fuels Cougar Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Sophomore Haley Chambers tossed her second no-hitter in three weeks and the SIUE softball team dominated Ohio Valley Conference rival Southeast Missouri in a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at Cougar Field.

SIUE (19-18, 11-3 OVC) blanked the Redhawks in a five-inning, 10-0 victory in game one before cruising to a 9-2 win in game two.

In the first game, Chambers threw the third no-hitter of her career by allowing no runs on no hits while striking out 11 SEMO batters.  She nearly tossed a perfect game, but Hayley Krack reached base with one out in the fifth inning after a swinging third strike eluded catcher Rachel Coonrod.

"Haley threw very well and had great command today," Head Coach Sandy Montgomery said.  "It's unfortunate she couldn't get the perfect game, but she still pitched very well."

The no-hitter is Chambers' second in three weeks, having also allowed no hits in a 1-0 victory at Tennessee Tech on March 22.  The Coatesville, Ind., native joins Montgomery, Kaitlin Colosimo, and Erika Taylor as the only SIUE pitchers in school history to throw three or more no-hitters during their collegiate careers.

The SIUE offense provided more than enough run support for Chambers, with a pair of home runs accounting for five of the Cougars' 10 runs.

Brittany Toney got things going with a three-run homer to right center field in the second inning, plating Kayla Riggs and Kelsey Hansen and giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead.  Riggs would go deep an inning later, sending a two-run shot over the left field fence to extend the SIUE lead to 6-0.

Alex McDavid and Chelsea Yankolovich also had big games offensively.  Yankolovich went 2-2 with three runs scored in the lead-off spot while McDavid notched a pair of hits and three RBIs.

"The wind helped a little bit but the home runs we hit were well-hit balls," Montgomery said.

In game two, Southeast (7-24, 2-11 OVC) got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning but it was all Cougars after that.

SIUE responded immediately with a two-run double from Yankolovich in the bottom of the second, before freshman Whitney Lanphier cracked a two-run home run an inning later to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead.

The hosts broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Lanphier to give her five RBIs for the game.

"I was really happy with how we hit today," Montgomery added.  "We came into today with a mindset of trying to control the things we can control, and I thought our players did that with some quality at-bats."

The Cougars and Redhawks will complete their three-game series with a single game Sunday at Cougar Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
