Box Score PALO ALTO, Calif. – No. 24 Stanford scored two unanswered goals in the first half Friday night to down SIUE men's soccer 2-1 in front of 475 at Cagan Stadium.
With the loss, SIUE falls to 0-5-2 for the season. Stanford improved to 5-1-0.
Senior Matt Polster notched his first goal of the season to put SIUE up 1-0 in the 10th minute of play. Polster snagged a rebound in front of the goal for his first tally of the season. Christian Volesky picked up the assist.
Marshall Glover equalized for the Cardinal in the 31st minute. Brandon Vincent got the game-winner for Stanford just 11 minutes later. Vincent got his head on a corner kick to make it 2-1.
Stanford outshot SIUE 10-8, but the Cougars held a 6-5 edge in the second half. SIUE also held the edge in shots on goal, with five. They forced Stanford keeper Andrew Epstein into four saves during the night. Travis Hoguet led the SIUE attack with two shots on goal.
Kent Kobernus made two saves for the Cougars.
The loss came to open a season-long three-game road trip for SIUE. The Cougars travel to Berkley, California Sunday for a 3 p.m. CT game with Cal.
