EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Central Michigan won four matches by two points or less Friday and defeated SIUE wrestling 26-9 at the Vadalabene Center.
"We talked about it after the match. Our intensity was there. Our fight was there. That hasn't been consistent throughout the year so I was happy with that," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates.
SIUE, now 3-12 in dual matches, picked up two matches by a single point each. Chris Johnson defeated Newton Smercheck 3-2 at 285 pounds. Jake Residori collected an overtime win over Jordan Ellingwood 3-2 at 174 pounds.
Derek Nagel was SIUE's biggest winner of the night with a 10-6 win over Christian Brucki in the first match of the evening at 184 pounds.
"There's still a little of the technique that we have to work on and believing in the system a little more, but we had some good wins," said Spates.
Central Michigan, now 5-4 overall, won six consecutive matches at one point, including a pair of major decisions.
SIUE now travels to Springfield, Illinois, Saturday for a neutral site match against the Northern Illinois Huskies. The first match is set for 6 p.m. at the Prairie Convention Center.
