SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Northern Illinois won the last three matches of the wrestling dual Saturday for a 19-15 come-from-behind victory over SIUE.
SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates said the match was very different from the earlier win this season over Northern Illinois.
"There were only two weight classes in which the same team won in both matches," said Spates. "I think we're very similar talent-wise."
SIUE and Northern Illinois each won five matches, but the difference in the team score was a forfeit in favor of the Huskies at 125 pounds and a major decision by NIU's Andrew Morse over Erik Travers at 157 pounds.
In front of a crowd at the Prairie Convention Center, Derek Nagel got the Cougars off to a good start for the second straight day. He was a 5-2 winner over Quinton Rosser at 184 pounds.
"Derek is on a bit of a roll," said Spates.
Chris Johnson collected a 2-1 overtime win over Arthur Bunce at 285 pounds. SIUE also picked up back-to-back victories by Patrick Myers at 133 pounds, Angelo Silvestro at 141 pounds, and Karsten Van Velsor at 141 pounds.
"Chris did well to win in overtime. It was nice to see Patrick come back to the level he has been in the past. Angelo and Karsten had big wins so it was nice for them," added Spates.
With the Cougars up 15-9, Morse, Shaun'Qae McMurtry, and Trace Engelkes followed up for the Huskies with 10 straight team points for the team victory.
SIUE, 3-12, returns to Southern Conference action next Friday with a pair of dual meets against Davidson and VMI.
