EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE's upper weights claimed three victories Wednesday in a 34-9 loss to Southern Conference (SoCon) rival Appalachian State at the Vadalabene Center.
It was the SoCon opener for both teams. Appalachian State improved to 3-6 overall while SIUE fell to 3-11.
Jake Residori, Derek Nagel, and Jake Tindle each picked up victories for the Cougars.
Residori earned his team-leading 15th victory of the season with a 7-4 win over Forrest Przybysz. Nagel bested Dominick Vetell 7-3. Tindle blanked Tyler Radford 6-0.
"It was nice to get some wins on the board with those three," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "Residori has been wrestling well lately so it's nice to see him have a good night."
Overall, Spates said the Cougars have some corrections to make before their next match Jan. 16 at home against Central Michigan.
"We're a better team than what we wrestled tonight," Spates said.
The Cougars gave up early takedowns in a handful of matches and had to work from behind.
"You have to come out to wrestle right away. You have to be ready to wrestle right off the opening whistle," said Spates.
Appalachian State collected bonus team points with three pins, one technical fall, and two major decisions. One turnaround was ASU's Mike Longo with an overtime pin over SIUE's Angelo Silvestro at 141. Both wrestlers went into overtime with two points, but Longo was able to put Silvestro into danger in the overtime period.
"I thought there were more winnable matches out there," added Spates.
