Five Cougars Place at Joe Parisi Open

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Five SIUE wrestlers finished among the top five in their respective weight classes Saturday at the Joe Parisi Open.

John Fahy (149), Derek Nagel (184) and Cameron Kelly (141) each placed second. Jake Residori, wrestling unattached, placed fourth at 174 pounds. Nate Higgins, fresh off a major decision Friday night against Missouri, took fifth.

"It was a tough tournament," said SIUE head Coach Jeremy Spates, "so coming away with any place winners was a good thing."

Fahy marched to the finals only to be defeated for a second straight day by Missouri's Lavion Mayes. Nagel lost to West Virginia's Jacob Scheffel in the final match. Kelly recorded two pins en route to his finals match. Residori's final match was a 3-2 nailbiter against Northeast Oklahoma's Jacobe Smith. Higgins lost one match in overtime and then earned fifth with a medical forfeit.

"We've had a tough first three weeks of the season," said Spates. "We're happy to get through somewhat healthy."

The Cougars are now idle until Dec. 5 when they travel to Bloomington, Indiana, to take on Indiana University.
